 IBPS English Syllabus Topics

English Section of IBPS Exam is a major part it contains approx 40 marks. so don’t take it to light English language section is a very major part of IBPS PO, Clerk, SO Exam.

This particular section is comprised of 30 marks for PO examination and clerk examination respectively. The subject is comprised of 40 marks in case of clerk main examination where you’ll be bounded by time limits i.e. you’ll be allotted only 30 minutes to complete this section only.

The subject is comprised of 35 marks in case of PO main examination where you’ll be bounded by time limits i.e. you’ll be allotted only 40 minutes to complete this section only.

Vocabulary means homonyms, synonyms, antonyms, sentence completion, Sentence rearrangement questions, word formation, topic comprehension means the conclusion, theme detection, passage completion, the topic rearrangement of passage, spelling, sentence.

Topic grammar means a set of rules active, passive voice, direct indirect speech. The topic general usage means phrases and idioms, Grammar, Articles, Preposition, Sentence Improvement, Spotting Error Questions, One Word Substitution, Sentence Completion, Fill in the Blanks, etc. Also, Check – IBPS Bank Clerk and PO Exam (Pre – Mains) Syllabus

Note that there are no time limits in Prelims for both PO and Clerk exams.

The syllabus for IBPS English subject capsules itself with 4 kinds of ingredients which are specified and explained in detail as under.

  1. English Passage = 10-15 questions are asked.
    This is generally called as a Reading Comprehension unit where you will be given an unseen passage, maybe on Economy, politics, fiction, or anything. Comprehension means the conclusion, theme detection, passage completion, and the topic rearrangement of passage, spelling, and sentence. You’ll be questioned on the basis of that passage and simultaneously your reading knowledge, your speed to grab the meaning and antonyms synonyms vocal will also be tested.
  2. Grammar = 5 questions are asked.
    This is really the main and sensitive portion of your test as it includes all your main topics like Tenses, articles, prepositions, subject-verb agreement, sentence construction, phrasal verbs, pronouns, nouns, adverbs, non-finite verbs, common errors, degrees of comparisons, active and passive voice, direct-indirect speech, idioms, and one-word substitution.
  3. Vocabulary = 10-15 questions are asked.
    You need to focus on topics such as- error spotting, phrase replacement, cloze test, fill in the blanks, and sentence rearrangement.
  4. Para jumbles or verbal ability = 5 questions can be asked.
    It includes jumbling of sentences and you need to correct it either verbally, or rearranging it Sentence rearrangement questions.

Note- A penalty will be charged on every wrong answer saved by you during the exam. 0.25 Marks will be deducted from each wrong attempted question, so be aware of the negative marking criteria. It is suggested to not attempt those questions which are not sure to answer. Let those questions to attempt at the last or just skip it so that you at least do not gain more negative marks on the whole of positive answers.
